No Force Queen
One of the oldest tactics in Hearts is flushing the queen: leading spade after spade until the player holding the queen of spades runs out of cover and has to play it. No Force Queen takes that tactic away.
The rule
Section titled “The rule”When spades are led and the queen of spades is the only spade in your hand, you do not have to follow suit. You may play any card instead: the queen, or anything else you hold.
That is the only change. Everything else is standard:
- If you hold the queen and another spade, you must follow with a spade as usual (either one).
- If the queen is your last card, you play it. There is nothing else to play.
- When anything other than a spade is led, follow-suit works normally.
Why play it
Section titled “Why play it”A bare queen is normally a liability: everyone at the table can count spades and will lead them until it drops. Under this rule a bare queen can hide for as long as its holder likes, which makes the hand harder to read and the endgame less predictable. It is also a good rule for newer players, who otherwise lose the queen to a tactic they have not seen yet.
A note on counting
Section titled “A note on counting”Because a player who discards on a spade lead might still be sitting on the queen, “they showed out of spades” no longer means “they have no spades”. The bots know this and keep the queen in mind.
Rated or casual?
Section titled “Rated or casual?”Casual. Games under No Force Queen never change anyone’s rating.
