Jack of Diamonds (-10)
Adds one more scoring card on top of the normal hearts and queen of spades: whoever takes the jack of diamonds in a trick gets -10 applied to their hand score.
The jack of diamonds itself is not a penalty card in the normal 26-point count; it’s worth 0 the way any other diamond is. This -10 is a separate bonus layered on top.
That also means the jack of diamonds does not count toward shooting the moon. Moon shots are still about taking all 13 hearts and the queen of spades; the jack of diamonds bonus applies independently, even to a player who shoots the moon.
Worked example
Section titled “Worked example”Same hand as the base rules example, but seat B also happens to take the jack of diamonds this time:
| Seat | Hearts taken | Queen of spades | Jack of diamonds | Hand score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 3 | no | no | 3 |
| B | 0 | no | yes | 0 - 10 = -10 |
| C | 4 | yes | no | 17 |
| D | 6 | no | no | 6 |
Because scores can go negative with this rule active, games with Jack of Diamonds turned on default to a lower end score, 75 instead of 100, since the -10 swings make games run longer than the base scoring would.
